Lisp is the major language for AI work, but it is by no means the only one. The other strong contender is Prolog, whose name derives from “programming in logic.”1 The idea behind logic programming is that the programmer should state the relationships that describe a problem and its solution. These relationships act as constraints on the algorithms that can solve the problem, but the system itself, rather than the programmer, is responsible for the details of the algorithm.
