Glossary

Abstract data type (ADT). A data type given by its set of allowed values and the available operations on those values. The values and operations are defined independently of a particular representation of the values or implementation of the operations. In a programming language that directly supports ADTs, the interface of the type reveals the operations on it, but the implementation is hidden and can (in principle) be changed without affecting clients that use the type. The classic example of an ADT is a stack, which is defined by its operations, typically including push and pop. Many different internal representations are possible.
