Cryptography touches upon many of the different areas within security and IT and therefore pen testing. Many of the techniques that you’ll learn about in future chapters either incorporate various components of cryptography or can be thwarted simply by applying cryptographic tools and techniques. In fact, many of the mechanisms we use for e-commerce and data protection wouldn’t even be possible in some cases without cryptography. Therefore, this chapter discusses the different areas of cryptography and how having an understanding of it will make you more effective as a pentester.
