8.7 Summary
MDC has emerged as a powerful new physical database design technique. Although it
has been discussed in the research literature for several decades, it has emerged onto the
industrial scene with a full implementation in DB2. It offers potentially huge perfor-
mance improvement for query processing and roll-out by dramatically reducing the I/O
processing performed. Special care needs to be taken in designing MDC tables, in par-
ticular to achieve data density in the storage blocks, so that table storage requirements
do not expand unreasonably. A design constraint of 5–15% expansion is recommended.
