Policy Distribution Using SNMP
Because the distribution of policies to the devices and configuring them is part of the management aspects of the devices, you can use existing management protocols to achieve this goal. In the case of routers and networking policies, the preferred protocol to use is SNMP. SNMP was described briefly in Chapter 2.
SNMP is firmly established in the networking community, and every new protocol and technology that comes up invariably defines a MIB that allows the configuration and instrumentation for that technology. MIBs that will allow the configuration of DiffServ capable routers are being worked on in the standards bodies. The same holds true for IP security protocols.
