The PostgreSQL developers reached a major milestone with the release of version 8.0. Starting with that release, PostgreSQL now runs as a native Windows application (in prior releases, PostgreSQL relied on the Cygwin package to provide a Unix-like environment on top of the Win32 subsystem). PostgreSQL version 8.0 runs as a true Windows application. The PostgreSQL server (that is, the postmaster) now runs as a Windows service—you can start and shutdown the PostgreSQL service through the Windows Control Panel.
