Basics: In thermal power plants the chemical energy of fuel is converted to the thermal energy of steam, which is converted to kinetic energy in turbines acting as prime movers to generate electrical energy. Overall conversion percentage efficiencies in power plants include: subcritical 30-40, supercritical (SC) 40–45, and ultra supercritical (USC) ∼50.
