If the battery chargers (BCs) described in a previous chapter represent an important component of auxiliary DC power supply systems, uninterruptable power supplies (UPSs) are no less important for auxiliary AC power supply systems and in general for systems of 0.4 kV substations and power plants.
There are different varieties of UPSs according to type, principle of operation, and design. According to international standard IEC 62040-3 [1] there are three main types of UPSs:
