5System Grounding
5.1 Methods of Grounding
The various methods of system grounding have evolved over the years. This chapter evaluates each approach and explains why certain methods are regularly applied by the power systems engineers for the specific engineering applications. Proper selection of transformer winding configurations is essential in the design of power systems for utilities and industrial facilities with respect to the system grounding.
Throughout my working experience, it was evident that the field of grounding is the most ignored and lacking subject of electrical engineering. Fortunately, as a young engineer, I worked with a well‐known and award winning electrical engineer Mr. Andy Sturton of Shawinigan Engineering Co. who gave me insights into this important subject and guided me in making proper engineering decisions.
What is system grounding, and what is equipment grounding? It really is confusing, in particular to those of different engineering backgrounds. So, what is it?
- System grounding is a connection to ground from live (when energized) conductors of a piece of electrical equipment, such as transformer, generator, capacitor ...
