14.1 Motor Selection
Electrical motors are the main users of electrical power in any industrial plant. Motors drive mechanical equipment and systems: pumping, milling, ventilation, air supply, conveying, compressors, mills, heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), etc. Each of these services is a mechanical specialty by itself. The mechanical engineer is responsible to provide the specific requirements and environmental conditions to the equipment suppliers to determine the motor characteristics to perform the tasks required; kW (HP), torque curves A, B, C, D, motor starting requirements, variable speed (if applicable), enclosure type, and frame size. The motor usually comes to the plant site coupled together with its mechanical equipment.
