19Power Dispatch and Control

19.1 Plant and System Operation

Power dispatch and generation control are some of the major daily activities in the power plant and system operation. It is important for young engineers to learn the basic concepts of the operation of power systems to be able to insert themselves into the ongoing conversations. There are two principal activities handled by dispatch centers responsible to operate the power system on a 24‐hour basis to generate, transmit, and deliver power to factories, residences, services, and roads on a timely, stable, and economic manner. These are

  1. Load and frequency control – governor action
  2. Reactive and voltage control – excitation action
