Surge Vessel Level Control

Surge vessels are used to help reduce the effect of flow rate variations between interconnected process units. It is not necessary to maintain tight level control in a surge vessel, resulting in a significantly different control objective compared to that of the steam drum level controller of Module 8.

After studying this module, the reader should be able to

  • Understand that for surge vessels it is often more important to have smooth outlet flowrate than to have tight level control

  • Understand benefits to nonlinear proportional-only control

  • Tune controllers based on desired input and output ranges
