Chapter 19. Programming with Access and SQL Server

The two specific database applications most commonly used in conjunction with Excel development are Access and SQL Server. In this chapter we demonstrate how to apply the database development building blocks introduced in Chapter 18, “Introduction to Database Development,” to development with Access and SQL Server.

A Note on the Northwind Sample Database

All the examples in this chapter are based on the original version of the Northwind database supplied by Microsoft with Access and SQL Server. Beginning with SQL Server 2005, Microsoft stopped shipping a SQL Server version of Northwind, instead replacing it with a much more complex sample database called AdventureWorks.
