Aucune discussion sur l'automatisation des réseaux ne serait complète sans évaluer le rôle que jouent les outils d'automatisation - comme Red Hat Ansible, Nornir et HashiCorp Terraform - dans un contexte d'automatisation des réseaux.
Traditionnellement, cet outillage est plus axé sur le cas d'utilisation de l'automatisation des serveurs. C'est compréhensible puisque certains de ces outils ont été créés pour automatiser les systèmes d'exploitation des serveurs et gérer les configurations des systèmes d'exploitation et/ou des applications. Ces dernières années, cependant, de multiples entreprises ont déployé beaucoup d'efforts pour améliorer la fonctionnalité d'automatisation des réseaux de leurs produits. Ces améliorations rendent ces produits beaucoup plus utiles et puissants pour l'automatisation des réseaux.
La gestion automatisée de la configuration était le principal cas d'utilisation au début. Mais avec l'avènement des services d'infrastructure dynamiques proposés principalement par les fournisseurs de Cloud public, l'outillage a évolué et de nouveaux acteurs sont entrés sur le terrain de jeu pour permettre la mise en place du paradigme IaC.
