Haskell is a descendant of the programming language Miranda, which sprang from a series of purely functional languages developed by David A. Turner in the late 1970s and 1980s. Haskell is a result of the efforts of a committee in the late 1980s to consolidate the existing lazy, purely functional languages into a standard intended to serve as the basis for future research in the design of functional programming languages. While designed by committee, Haskell was developed primarily at Yale University and University of Glasgow.
