In the last chapter, we looked at using our microcontroller to read sensors using the analog to digital converter onboard the microcontroller. However, the variety of devices we can interface to our microcontroller can be drastically increased when we start working with serial communications. In this chapter, we will look at the serial communication protocols of UART, SPI, and I2C. Understanding these protocols will expand the interfacing capability of our microcontroller.
