Partial rendering provides an excellent compromise between the need to implement asynchronous and out-of-band functionality and the desire to use the same familiar ASP.NET application model. As you've seen in this chapter, any ASP.NET page can be easily transformed into an ASP.NET AJAX page. You divide the original page into regions and assign each markup region to a distinct UpdatePanel control. From that point on, each updatable region can be refreshed individually through independent and asynchronous calls that do not affect the rest of the page.
