Chapter 4. Tools for Mobile Web Development

Unlike desktop web development, where you’re likely to create and test your work on the same device, mobile development generally requires setting up and managing several development environments.

Working with Code

For coding our markup, JavaScript, and CSS, we can use almost any web tool available on the market, including Adobe Dreamweaver, Microsoft Visual Studio, Eclipse, Aptana Studio, and of course any good text editor, such as Sublime Text, Textmate, WebStorm, or Notepad++. In mobile web development, it is often easier and cleaner to work directly with the code rather than using a visual tool or IDE.

Adobe Dreamweaver

Since the CS5.5 version, Dreamweaver has worked better with mobile markup and allows us to validate against mobile web standards. In this editor, when we create a new document we can choose HTML5 as the document type, as shown in Figure 4-1.

Version CS6 includes several enhancements that support mobile web design and development, such as:

  • HTML5 support and code hinting

  • Multiple screen preview

  • jQuery Mobile integration

  • PhoneGap Build integration for native web app compilation from the IDE

Dreamweaver allows us to define new files as HTML5 or XHTML Mobile Profile documents, as well as giving us the ability to start with a jQuery Mobile template.
