To make a software development plan, first produce a conceptual design and then estimate the size of the product to be built to that design. With the size estimate, you can then estimate how long it will take to develop the product. Before you can estimate a program’s size, however, you must have a way to measure size. This chapter describes the principal ways to measure the sizes of various products and how to use these measures for project planning and quality management.
