Chapter 12. Mathematical Tools
Modern quantitative finance relies heavily on numerical methods. This chapter shows how to approach core mathematical tasks—approximation, optimization, integration, and symbolic manipulation—using Python tools that you can reuse throughout the book.
You work entirely in the IPython REPL, using NumPy, SciPy, and SymPy for concrete,
finance-flavored examples. Later reference-style appendices (see
Appendix A,
Appendix B,
and Appendix C) provide more systematic
toolkits; here the focus is on how to think about and use these methods in practice.
The chapter develops a compact toolkit of mathematical methods that show up throughout
quantitative finance. You will approximate curves and surfaces with regression and
splines, solve nonlinear equations and constrained optimization problems with SciPy,
evaluate integrals numerically, and use SymPy for symbolic manipulations that feed
back into efficient numerical code.
To follow along, you need a Python environment with ...
