Blackboard Structures

Conventional blackboard architectures incorporate

a shared

common data area or blackboard as the common medium

for memory and interaction among a collection of

knowledge

sources. Control in typical blackboard systems is sequential

and organized by a centralized scheduler, but the knowledge

sources work with semantically disparate rules

or

procedures.

The

conception behind

the

blackboard architecture is "cooper-

ative interaction of communicating knowledge sources." The

blackboard architecture concept has been a mainstay of many

projects in DAI, as the primary local structure of individual

problem-solving node
