Foreword

This is an extraordinary book written by 16 extraordinary people. All of the authors are Microsoft MVP awardees for either Microsoft Office SharePoint® Server or Windows SharePoint® Services. MVP, in this context, stands for Most Valuable Professional. What makes MVPs so valuable to Microsoft? For starters, MVPs are very early adopters of Microsoft products and technologies, and they consistently provide a significant percentage of feature ideas and bug reports back to Microsoft. Secondly, MVPs have the innate quality of naturally sharing their knowledge in a no-holds-barred manner, and that's exactly what the authors of this book have done.

As the Microsoft SharePoint Product Group lead for the MVP program, I interact with the authors as well as other SharePoint MVPs on a very frequent basis. In fact, during the course of drafting this foreword, I exchanged emails with several of the authors about topics ranging from forms-based authentication (covered in Chapter 2) to customization and branding (covered in Chapter 6) based on real-world scenarios that they're currently dealing with. Every chapter in this book is based less on what SharePoint was designed to do and much more on how SharePoint has been implemented and utilized by the respective MVP in real-world scenarios. I would not hesitate to vouch for any of the authors as being an expert in their respective chapter topics.
