5Blending

In monochromatic drawing, blending is a technique used to soften lines and fill in areas in a blurred way, without sharpness, to create stains of tone instead of lines. Blending is an essential technique for realistic drawings, because it tends to hide the strokes left by the pencil, unlike shading. Figure 5.1 compares a stain made with a pencil only (left) and one made by blending the graphite with tissue (right). I used the same 4B pencil for both, but the effect is very different!
