Spaced Pair at the Tail of the Piano
This technique, much prized in the UK, has been used by Simon Eadon in his recordings of the pianist Marc André Hamelin for Hyperion. A description of the 20 December 2006 session for Hamelin’s recording of Charles-Valentin Alkan’s Troisième recueil de chants, Op. 65 at Henry Wood Hall in London, can be found online, along with two photos of the microphone setup.1 A spaced pair of Schoeps mics (MK 2S omnidirectional capsules), 23 centimeters (9 inches) apart, were pointed at the tail of the piano and angled slightly down from a height of 168 centimeters (66 inches) a meter or so (several feet) from the instrument.
