THE SECOND concept for building a foundation that will enable remarkable performance is to become a leader who embraces openness in your communication style (see Figure 3.1). Dr. John Maxwell once shared that as leaders we have a choice every time we come in contact (phone, e-mail, face-to-face) with our followers. We can choose to do one of two things: we can motivate them and have them persevere through whatever struggle our organization is facing. Or we can manipulate them with our words to get what we want to help make us look good to our up-line leadership.
