EPC IDENTITY ENCODINGS 233
The physical realization of the SSCC-96 begins at the MSB with the header 0011 0001 (8
bits) and concatenates the filter value (3 bits), for which we will again use the value 2.
Next comes the partition value (3 bits). For our example, this value would be 5. The Com-
pany Prefix is next (24 bits), followed by the Extension Digit plus the Serial Reference,
encoded in 34 bits. The check digit is discarded, as in the SGTIN. The value is then padded
to 96 bits by adding 24 trailing zero bits. The hex value for our example would thus be
315461CE90773593FE000000; with the CRC it is 7E57315461CE90773593FE000000.
GS1 GLN/SGLN Encoding
The Global Location Number (GLN) is an identifier introduced in January 2004 that con-
tains a Company Prefix and a Location Reference in 12 digits, followed by a single check
digit. The Location Reference field can identify a specific location such as a cabinet or
warehouse gate, or it can identify an aggregate location such as a factory or a hospital. A
GLN can also represent a logical entity, such as a region or department. The way GS1
describes this is that the GLN can represent any legal, functional, or physical entity. EPC-
global only uses this code as it refers to a specific physical location, indicated by the Appli-
cation Identifier “(414).” At some point, EPCglobal will add a Serial Number to the GLN,
creating a proper Serialized GLN ...
