The Chinese Room is designed to raise questions about the limits of artificial intelligence but it also serves to ask the question about types and hierarchies of knowing or intelligence. In Searle’s example, the semblance of knowing Chinese is inferior to actually knowing Chinese, even though they may appear to be the same. This suggests that it may be worth teasing out what we know about types of intelligence, and how susceptible each might be to being created artificially in a computer, in order to zero in on distinctively human intelligences.
