Chapter 11. Workflow/Process Automation
Throughout the preceding chapters, you’ve built a solid Salesforce foundation. You’re now ready to take the next step: learning how to automate business processes in Salesforce to save time and reduce the manual steps required for repetitive tasks.
In this chapter, we’ll explore the powerful automation capabilities that Salesforce provides. While the platform now revolves around Flow as the primary automation tool, we’ll begin with a simpler, but still essential, automation feature: approval processes.
Why start here?
Approval processes are structured and easier to configurethan Flows, making them a great introduction to the automation mindset. They provide a guided experience that helps you get comfortable with concepts like automation triggers, record locking, and email notifications before diving into the more advanced, logic-driven world of Flows.
Historically, Salesforce offered three primary tools for automation: workflow rules, Process Builder, and Flow. Salesforce has since retired workflow rules and Process Builder from active use. While you can no longer create new automations with them, you may still encounter these legacy tools in existing Salesforce implementations.
Note
You should not expect questions specifically about workflow rules or Process Builder on the Salesforce Platform Administrator certification exam. However, it’s still useful to understand what they are in case you encounter them on the job.
