If you've been working with a Unix or Linux system as you've gone through this book—and I dearly hope that you have—then you might have been curious why you have icons, menus, and all sorts of other neat whizbang interface features on your display but we've been focused exclusively on the command line. The answer is simple: many more Unix users work through an ssh or telnet connection than have a Unix or Linux system on their desktop. I haven't had a full-blown Unix system on my desk for at least five years, for example, but work with three different Unix and Linux servers every single day through the Internet.
