I first got into Japanese pop culture and anime in the late 1970s with STAR BLAZERS (the American version of Japan’s iconic SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO). Instantly, I knew that the art style, character design, and mature stories were LIGHT-YEARS beyond the American Saturday-morning cartoons I was watching. In the ’80’s, my love of this material extended to GUNDAM model kits, copies of the Japanese weekly SHŌNEN JUMP manga magazine (courtesy of a Japanese American family friend), and ROBOTECH.
