5 Case Consultation with Teachers and Parents

As student advocates, school counselors frequently find it essential to involve teachers and parents in developing a plan to help students. Both groups are strong allies in creating and maintaining an inviting and positive environment for the child or adolescent.

When working with students and especially with young children, it is very important to consult with the significant “big people” in their lives (i.e., parents and teachers). Your impact is greatly increased when you gather information, explore alternatives, offer suggestions, and help make plans with the parents and teachers who control so much of the physical, affective, and cognitive environment in which the child or adolescent lives. It is important to get the big people in a little person’s life pulling in the same direction.
