6 Typical Issues in School Consultation
Fostering an encouraging atmosphere for consultees helps create an inviting and positive climate for students. Helping teachers and parents to effectively engage in the consultative process (by teaching them how to refer students and what to say to students about seeing the counselor) sets the tone for the interventions that will follow. Counselors should also think about how they might respond to questions that are frequently posed regarding their consultative role, as well as how they will handle the resistant parent or teacher. Doing so allows the consultant to remain positive and focused throughout the process, even if these issues arise.
How to Refer Students
Sometimes, teachers want counselor intervention without having to spend time in consultation. They may drop a note in your mailbox or in passing ask you to meet with a student. Neither method of referral gives you much helpful information.
