32 Peripheral photography
32.1 Introduction
The production of a complete circumferential record of subject details in a single photograph requires the use of specialist equipment such as a peripheral camera. Sometimes it is possible to use mirrors behind the subject to obtain lateral and posterior views not visible by the camera as in the recording of the edge inscriptions of coins (see Figure 32.1) (Burns, 1967). Similarly for details of human posture for purposes as diverse as fitting of clothing and orthopaedics. But mirrors can give problems of lateral reversal and virtual object positions.
