This book describes Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) as an operational system employing cryptography, information technology, business rules, specific use cases, and legal matters. Whereas both cryptography and information technology are reasonably consistent across the PKI industry, the business rules, use cases, and legal matters vary among different industry groups. Many of the relevant standards organizations are discussed in Chapter 1, “Introduction,” along with a history of the associated industry standards in Chapter 3, “PKI Building Blocks,” including ITU-T, PKCS, ASC X9, and IETF.
