You can download and install a build of Riak provided by Basho[10] (the company that funds its development), but we actually prefer to build this one since you get some preconfigured examples. If you really don’t want to build it, just install a prebuilt version, and then grab the source code and extract the example dev servers. Erlang[11] is also required to run Riak (R14B03 or greater).

Building Riak from source requires three things: Erlang, the source code, and general Unix build tools like Make.
