Exploring Statements

SNOBOL statements can be informally categorized into one of four classes based on their function and purpose within the language: assignment, pattern matching, replacement, and end. The distinctions between these classes are merely semantic. They relate to the meaning and purpose of the statements rather than their syntax.

Any SNOBOL statement consists of at least one of the following—a label, a subject group, and a goto:

  • Optional label
  • Optional subject group:
    • Subject
    • Optional pattern
    • Optional object group:
      • “ = ” (don’t forget the spaces!)
      • Optional object
  • Optional goto
