Abstract:
This chapter discusses various social networking sites and tools that can be used to support and advance a variety of scholarly activities. It is divided into two main sections: (1) popular non-academic social networking sites; and (2) popular and emerging academic social networking sites for online scholarly communities. Each section includes analysis and discussion about the relative strengths and weaknesses of different social networking platforms, their target audience and community norms.
