Service providers and SDN

4.1 Introduction

Telecommunication service providers have constructed some of the largest and most complicated networks currently in existence. Now, they are facing a severe problem as revenues are incrementally increasing and network equipment costs are growing exponentially (Figure 4.1). For these service providers, their interest in software-defined networking (SDN) is all about economics.
