SDN in Other Environments

Abstract

Chapter 8 looks beyond the data center at other domains in which SDN will play a major role. In this discussion about a number of additional domains, we present use cases specific to each. In the case of Wide Area Networks, Service Provider and Carrier Networks, we include applications of MPLS traffic engineering that are facilitated by SDN. We explain the cloud-bursting application whereby SDN can be used by service providers for dynamic expansion and contraction of cloud resources as a function of tenants’ demands. For campus and hospitality networks we show SDN applications of dynamic policy provisioning as well as Captive Portal and other Network Access Control applications. We include an example ...
