How to Have Outrageously Good Ideas

Imagine two of your colleagues are talking about your accomplishments, perhaps in the process of nominating you for an award. “She works so hard”, one says, “she just won’t give up”. “Sure, but the thing I really admire is how creative she is – she just seems to repeatedly come up with outrageously good ideas” replies the other. Which of these two compliments would you find more satisfying? Receiving any compliment feels good of course, but being viewed as creative has special cachet. After all, anyone can work hard, but being creative feels like a rare and valuable gift. In careers focused on research, creativity separates superstars from the rest of their field.
