Chapter 7Patience and Plan to Surpass Human-Level Performance
Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into business operations is transformative but often involves phases where AI may initially underperform compared to human capabilities. This early struggle is not a deterrent but a critical part of the innovation process. Understanding this can help avoid the pit known as the innovator's dilemma, where promising projects are prematurely terminated due to short-term performance issues. For example, a company implementing AI chatbots for customer service might initially find these bots less effective than human agents. Early interactions may lead to slower responses and occasional errors, causing customer frustration. However, this phase highlights AI's potential. As the AI system learns from each interaction, it improves, eventually surpassing human performance by efficiently handling more queries and providing consistent, 24/7 support. Prematurely terminating the project during its initial struggles overlooks the long-term benefits and innovation that AI can bring once it matures and adapts to the business's specific needs.
This chapter emphasizes the need for patience and strategic planning to harness AI's potential and achieve and surpass human-level performance, instilling confidence in the long-term benefits of AI projects (see Figure 7.1). We explore why patience is essential, considering factors such as task complexity, data requirements, and the incremental nature ...
