Before you’re flying so high with some guy in the sky, you need to disable radio communications on your mobile device. The Airplane Mode switch makes this simple.
The United States allows the use of handheld personal electronics below 10,000 feet, even though laptops and other large devices are supposed to be stowed so they don’t become projectiles. (1,000-page books are still fine, bizarrely.) Other countries’ rules vary.
Cellular radios remain banned, and one ostensibly should not turn on Wi-Fi unless in a plane equipped with Wi-Fi service. Short-range Bluetooth services, like those used with headphones and keyboards, are permitted, however.
