Cancellation is an essential mechanism in task programming. It is helpful in any of the following scenarios:

  • Stopping a running task gracefully when it is no longer needed

  • Freeing up a critical resource

  • Improving the application’s responsiveness

This is why a long-running task may regularly check whether a cancellation request has been raised. If so, it must respond to that request accordingly.
