Channel Capacity

Due to turbulence in the atmosphere, when the signal is in deep fade, there is a considerable deterioration in the performance of the signal in the free space optical (FSO) channel. As discussed in Chapter 5, unlike in the case of AWGN channel, the situation in the FSO system cannot be improved by increasing the signal power only; instead diversity is to be used to improve the BER performance of the signal in the low SNR region. Also, the error performance can be improved in the lower SNR region by using advanced error correcting coding schemes, such as, the Turbo or Low Density Parity Check codes so as to approach the optimum performance.
