Part One gave an overview of the ageing of the individual and greying of society. Their interaction with the different elements of society is the subject matter of Part Two. The old have always been there. But their small number meant that the overall influence of the old on society was limited. This is changing, and further change is inevitable.

Demographers are generally confident of the next fifty years but not beyond. Generally speaking, the present study undertakes to forecast the future scenario for a period no further than this limited time span. In today’s fast changing world this is a long enough period.
