Prologue

1. The Times of India, December 20, 1971.

2. Peter G. Peterson in his article published in Foreign Affairs, September/October 2004 issue, writes on the adverse effects of ageing. On the other hand Paul R. Ehrlich who introduced the term ‘Population Explosion’ still holds the view that the increasing world population is the problem. He believes that an aging world is a helpful development, since it will reduce environmental pollution. See One with Nineveh, by Paul R. Ehrlich and Ann Ehrlich, Shearwater 2004. Also see Lincoln H. Day, The Future of Low-Birthrate Population, Routledge, 1992.

3. This point has come up for discussion in Chapter 5.

4. Also see note on President Clinton’s meeting with top US scientists on July 24, 1997.
