Although dragons take on very different roles in myths and legends, they often display physical or behavioral characteristics that allow them to be categorized into distinct groupings. Different sources may provide conflicting descriptions of the types of dragons, but I try to use the most popular and logical nomenclature for each classification. In this book, I include some creatures that may not appear very dragonlike (such as the naga on page 25 and the amphisbaena on page 34), but they belong here because they function as dragons in certain regional mythologies.
