The first time I went to Dubai, it was at the apex of its out-of-control growth. Skyscrapers by the dozen going up like Lego castles. Bentleys, Gucci, industry everywhere. And a citywide attitude to match. A year later I returned and the city was paralyzed, in shock from the worldwide credit crisis.
