17.7 The Edge-Detect Filters
The five filters in the Edge-Detect menu all detect the edges in the image and emphasize them. They find places where there is a strong change of color intensity, which often indicates the edge of an object. The result is generally an outline of the image, with the colors diminished or removed, set on a black or white background. Often, a better result can be obtained by first adding a blur to the image to smooth small irregularities and avoid false edges. We added a mild blur to the image shown in Figure 17-123, which will be used to demonstrate the Edge-Detect filters.
