Business Planning and Development: Early Stages

In the “old days,” artists viewed the business side of music as being separate from the music. They hoped or expected that someone else would manage their business for them, so they could be free to just create. In the current digital environment of direct-to-fan and viral social media marketing, that’s an outdated model. The artist is now fully responsible for the business side of their artistic career. As you will see, what is needed is a deliberate mindset—a set of principles, attitudes, and ways of thinking—which, together, will prepare the musician to compete in the music industry.
